Setting

In the beginning of the book, Dominic is on Ellis Island in a museum with a class-trip and there he falls asleep. In the middle of the book, it takes place in Avaletto in Italy. At the end of the book, it takes place on Ellis Island again. Dominic wakes up from his dream and he is back in the museum at Ellis Island. ‘I don’t know what happened, I was talking to an old man. It was so dark, and then I heard a rumbling noise and the ground began to shake. I don’t remember anything after that’.

The story actually takes place in two different time periods. Dominic is taken back in time a lot of years, to Italy in 1908. Actually the whole story takes place in the year 1908 until he returns back to the present. Dominic sleeps one night, after this, he is taken back in time. His dream lasts a couple of weeks. So the story covers a period of approximately one month.

The setting contributes to the story because Dominic's family moved from Italy to America. The story is about Dominic who is shown the life of his grand grandfather and family. They were Italian immigrants and immigrated to America to find a new home. “I came to America when I was a boy of eleven years old. I am all-alone and nobody cares. In Italy we had very little and yet we had so much. I am afraid I don’t know what to do.”
